It’s Heart Week: Let’s Talk About the Health of Your Heart

Every day, The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation – through our community and fundraising initiative, The Common Good – supports groundbreaking research that saves lives.

This Heart Week, we’re taking a moment to shine a light on the importance of protecting your most vital organ: your heart.

As the proud charity partner of one of Australia’s leading heart hospitals, The Prince Charles Hospital, we’re dedicated to improving heart health outcomes. That includes funding innovative equipment, patient care programs, research career pathways, and supporting critical research projects to their completion.

In 2024 alone, 55% of the research grants awarded by The Common Good at The Prince Charles Hospital had a focus on heart health. Why? Because heart disease remains one of the leading cause of death in Australia – and breakthroughs are only possible through research.

What Is Heart Week?

Running from 5 to 11 May 2025, Heart Week is a national campaign led by the Heart Foundation. It encourages Australians to check in on their heart health, reduce their risk of cardiovascular disease, and support research that leads to better prevention, diagnosis and treatment.

It’s the perfect time to take stock of your own health – and support the research that’s helping to change it for good.

Why Heart Research Matters More Than Ever

At The Prince Charles Hospital Foundation, we see the impact of heart disease every day. From patients living with heart failure, to those navigating arrhythmias, to families waiting for a heart transplant – The Prince Charles Hospital is at the frontline of care.

Today’s treatments are built on yesterday’s research. That’s why your support is so vital. Philanthropy powers the work of researchers, and together, we’re shaping the future of heart care.

How Your Donations Are Advancing Heart Research

Here are just a few ways your support is driving innovation:

  • New Investigator grants – helping to launch research careers by funding early-career researchers tackling real clinical needs.
  • Research Fellowships – supporting dedicated and experienced researchers to conduct long-term, in-depth projects developing new treatments and improving patient outcomes.
  • Improving donor heart availability – helping more Australian’s in need of a heart transplant get a second chance at life.

How to Take Part in Heart Week

Here’s how you can protect your own heart and support the hearts of others this Heart Week:

  1. Book a Heart Health Check with your GP
The 20-minute Heart Health Check, covered by Medicare, helps assess your risk of a heart attack or stroke within the next five years. It’s one of the most important steps you can take for your future health.
  2. Try the Heart Age Calculator
Find out how your heart health stacks up by using the Heart Foundation’s Heart Age Calculator. It’s a simple online tool that compares your heart age to your actual age – and offers personalised advice to reduce risk.
  3. Fund life-saving heart research
Your support funds critical research right here at The Prince Charles Hospital. Whether it’s a one-time donation or a monthly gift, you’re helping to power the next breakthrough in heart care.

You Can Help Advance Heart Health

The Common Good exists to help people live healthier for longer – and heart research is at the core of that mission.

Thanks to the generosity of supporters like you, we continue to lead the way in heart health innovation and discovery. But there’s more to do – and we can’t do it without you.
