Strawberry Sundaes bring memories alive

How food nostalgia is helping vital medical research

Food and memories of food provide a deep connection to our past. It is why one taste of a childhood favourite can transport us back through time to when we were five years old. It is why for many, a trip to the Ekka is not complete without indulging in a Strawberry Sundae.

Writer and stylist, Brooke Falvey from what_brooke_wore has wonderful memories of the Ekka Strawberry Sundaes.

“They’re such an iconic part of Brisbane life,” Brooke explains.

“I remember visiting the Ekka as a kid and I loved it all, but the best part was seeing my Grandma who volunteered at The Strawberry Sundae stall in the old show bag pavilion. Perhaps that’s why I love them so much, because they were made with love!”

The combination of strawberry and vanilla ice cream, fresh strawberries and whipped cream with a strawberry topper makes an irresistible combination. It is the uniqueness of the Strawberry Sundae that keeps people coming back year after year. Nothing else tastes quite like it.

One of the reasons why the Strawberry Sundaes have a taste all of their own is the yummy ice cream used. Local ice cream supplier, Lick Ice Cream actually produce a special edition strawberry ice cream just for the Strawberry Sundaes!

While Strawberry Sundaes first made their appearance at the Ekka in the 1950s, it was in the late 1980s that The Common Good became the official charity, with all profits from the sale of its Strawberry Sundaes going towards medical research.

Since 2008, Ekka Strawberry Sundae stall sales have powered an amazing 41, 986 hours of innovative medical research.

The Ekka holds a special place in the memories of the people of Brisbane, and more broadly Queensland. While there are many favourites – the woodchopping competition, the animal nursery, sideshow alley and of course the showbag pavilion, for many it is the memories of the food that stand out the most, in particular the iconic Strawberry Sundae.

If you would like to share your photos and memories of enjoying a delicious Strawberry Sundae and what it means to you, feel free to contact us on Facebook or email us at info@thecommongood.org.au.
